Due to its interdisciplinary nature, research conducted in the Daylighting Lab attracts students from many disciplines including Building Technology, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and others, which provides a dynamic framework of collaboration and interaction between people with a large range of backgrounds and interests.
Marilyne Andersen is a physics engineer whose principal research interests are the use and optimization of daylight in buildings. After completing her PhD in 2004 at EPFL in Switzerland, with a year as a Visiting Scholar at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2001-2002, she joined the MIT faculty in the summer of 2004. She currently teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in Daylighting and Building Technology and conducts research on advanced glazing and shading systems, on interactive daylight simulation methods and on emerging metrics in lighting design.
Sian Kleindienst - Building Technology (PhD, SMBT): Sian Kleindienst hails from Scottsdale, AZ. She got a B.A. in physics from Harvard, and a Masters in Building Technology from MIT, where she is currently working on her Ph.D. Although her research has focused on daylighting, she has a general interest in operational energy efficiency in buildings
Jaime Lee - Building Technology ( PhD BT): Jaime Lee is currently working on the LightSolve project, researching goal-driven optimization processes for architectural design using daylighting simulation. She holds degrees in engineering (BA, Harvard) and architecture (MArch, MS; UPenn).
Eleanor Stokes- Mechanical Engineering (SM): Kellie Stokes is a MechE MS student working with the daylighting lab on the development of the MIT Heliodome. Kellie graduated from Dartmouth, majoring in Math and Studio Art. A native Alabamian, she worked for two years designing and building $20,000 houses with the Auburni Rural Studio in Newbern, AL.
Christopher Pechacek - Building Technology (SMArchS): Pursuing a SMArchS, Chris hails from Virginia Tech (BArch 01) with 5 years experience in healthcare projects with the USAF Surgeon General office. His interests include environmentally conscious design, impact of the built environment on wellbeing, architectural technology, and urban design.
Lu Yi - Computation (SMArchS): Lu Yi is a SMArchS student in the Computation Group with a B.Arch and B.E in Computer Science from Huazhong Univ. of Science & Technology in China. She is interested in the application of digital technologies to design practice and is working with the Daylighting Lab on the development of the LightSolve interface.
